Mae Rae Lewis-Ayling, cyn-fyfyriwr Ysgol Friars, wedi ymuno â phrosiect Ice Warrior ar yr alldaith Last Pole fel aelod o'r tîm, ac mae'n hyfforddi fel hyfforddwr ar gyfer y prosiect cyfan.
Bydd taith y Pegwn Olaf yn cymryd 4 tîm o gyfranogwyr mewn ras gyfnewid o leiaf 20 diwrnod trwy sgïo, troed a phadl, ar hyd trawslun 800 milltir sy'n anelu at Begwn Gogleddol , y pwynt pellaf o dir ar Gefnfor yr Arctig a'r Polar First olaf eto i'w gyrraedd gan ddynolryw. Daw'r cyfranogwyr o bob lefel o brofiad, cefndiroedd a chenhedloedd, wedi'u hyfforddi i fod yn fforwyr pegynol modern cymwys.
Ar hyd y llwybr bydd y tîm yn casglu data gwyddonol hanfodol, yn mesur popeth o'r tywydd, trwch iâ'r môr, profi am blastigau yn y cefnfor ac wrth gwrs arsylwi a dogfennu poblogaethau anifeiliaid. Mae amgylcheddau eithafol fel yr Arctig yn fregus iawn, ac o'r herwydd yn rhoi rhybudd cynnar a chadarnhad o'n heffaith ar yr hinsawdd.
Felly, mae data a gasglwyd mewn llefydd o'r fath yn hanfodol ar gyfer rhagweld cwrs newid yn yr hinsawdd a mesur effeithiolrwydd ein polisïau i frwydro a'i liniaru. Yn anffodus, oherwydd anghysbell y rhanbarthau hyn, mae data sydd gennym yn aml yn hen ac yn anghyflawn, neu'n cael ei gasglu o bell o loeren a all ei adael yn agored i'w ddehongli.
Yn nhermau anifeiliaid, yn aml dydyn ni ddim yn gwybod cymaint â hynny am y lledredau uwch. Er enghraifft, er bod 19 o is-boblogaethau gwahanol o arth begynol, dim ond ar 6 ohonynt y cynhaliwyd astudiaethau, gan arwain at amrywiant enfawr mewn amcangyfrifon o'u niferoedd.
Mae'r daith yn cael ei chefnogi'n rhyngwladol gan sefydliadau ac unigolion mor amrywiol â'r National Snow and Ice Institute, David Attenborough, NASA a'r diweddar Ddug Caeredin. Bydd y data sy'n cael ei gasglu ar gael yn rhydd i bawb sy'n dymuno ei ddefnyddio.

Former Ysgol Friars student Rae Lewis-Ayling has joined project Ice Warrior on the expedition Last Pole as a team member, and is training as an instructor for the project as a whole.
The Last Pole expedition will take 4 teams of participants in relays of minimum 20 days by ski, foot and paddle, along an 800 mile transect aiming for the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, the farthest point from land on the Arctic Ocean and the last Polar First yet to be reached by human kind. The participants come from all levels of experience, backgrounds and nations, trained up to become competent modern polar explorers.
Along the route the team will collect vital scientific data, measuring everything from weather, sea ice thickness, testing for plastics in the ocean and of course observing and documenting animal populations. Extreme environments like the Arctic are very fragile, and as such provide early warning and confirmation of our effect on climate. Data gathered in such places is therefore vital for predicting the course of climate change and measuring the effectiveness of our policies to combat and mitigate it. Unfortunately, owing to the remoteness of these regions, data we have is often out of date and incomplete, or gathered remotely from satellite which can leave it open to interpretation. In animal terms, we often don't know all that much about the higher latitudes. For example, despite there being 19 distinct sub-populations of polar bear, studies have only been conducted on 6 of them, leading to massive variance in estimates of their numbers.
The expedition is backed internationally by organisations and individuals as diverse as the National Snow and Ice Institute, David Attenborough, NASA and the late Duke of Edinburgh. The data gathered will be made freely available to all who wish to use it.
