On Friday 1st July a team of Ysgol Friars Kayakers took part in this years Gemau Cymru. Competing against athletes from all of Wales the team travelled down to Cardiff international white water centre. Eden Potter, Harry Street, Lucy Tatam and Aaron White all made it through their heats and to the finals in the sprint racers. This included open canoe tandems, sit on top and general purpose kayaks. Often going straight from one event to another. The finals were very close with pupils putting in fantastic effort and coming in the top 6 in Wales in a variety of events. Aaron(14) even managing this despite competing in the under 18’s category instead of the 14 and under category due to a misunderstanding of the age limits.
When it came to the white water slalom, all put in a fantastic effort on a fast technical course. Big bouncy water and 19 gates to negotiate left the panting and wanting more. Luckily there was a conveyor belt there to carry them back up to the top of the course for their second run. The course and white water was new to all the team and they were competing against other competitors that trained regularly at the international white water course. Lucy Tatam managed to a win Bronze medal in the female K1 slalom. A brilliant effort from all for competitors on behalf of Ysgol Friars.
