  • OPEN EVENING INTRODUCTION

Welcome to our Prospective Year 12 Virtual Open Evening. Unfortunately Covid-19 prevents us from holding face-to-face meetings so we are offering a Virtual Open Evening for you to discuss Key Stage 5 courses with members of staff instead. During the evening Dr Keith Varty (Head of Sixth Form), Mr David Healey (Deputy Head Teacher in Charge of Curriculum Development) and Heads of Department or Teachers in Charge of Subjects will be available via Microsoft TEAMS to answer any questions you may have about the school and the courses on offer. To make sure the session runs smoothly and effectively, please fill in the registration form below with your details and return the completed form to the following e-mail address: LCH@friars.gwynedd.sch.uk . Once we receive your form we will be able to send you the link to the event. We have made available a copy of our 2020-2021 prospectus (Covid-19 restrictions have delayed the publication of next year’s prospectus), a provisional application and options form as well as a summary of the A-level requirements for different degree courses and a link to the Russell Group Informed Choices site to help you in deciding which subjects you would like to study.

It is unfortunate that you are unable to visit the school in person. In the past, parents and pupils have commented on the positive ethos and atmosphere and have been impressed by how friendly and helpful the Sixth Formers are who show them around the school. If you do get a chance to visit us you will see many modern buildings on a well looked after site that is respected by pupils. Visitors who walk through the corridors during the teaching day comment upon how they only hear the sound of quiet and purposeful work. We support our Sixth Form students with access to their own Learning Centre equipped with modern computers and a ‘Bistro’ section where hot food and drinks are served from early morning until the end of the lunch break, in addition to the canteen facilities in our two refectories. Pupils with both additional learning needs and the most able thrive here. We regularly have Sixth Formers who go on to study at Oxford and Cambridge as well as other top Russell Group universities such as Imperial College, UCL, Durham, Manchester etc. Our Sixth Form is the largest in the county with results that have been in the top five schools nationally. We are a popular choice for parents from as far afield as Criccieth and Holyhead. It’s a pity that you couldn’t come and see the school in person, but we hope that this Virtual Open Evening will give you a flavour of what it is like to be a Sixth Form student at Ysgol Friars.
