    WJEC Level 1/Level 2 GCSE in Geography B

    What will I learn?

    This course will help you to learn:

    • The Course helps develop a “sense of place”, an understanding of the physical and human processes which produce geographical patterns, an awareness of the ways in which people interact with each other and their environments and to encourage a sensitivity to and an understanding of different communities and cultures.
    • Content:

                  Unit 1 – Challenges and Interactions in Geography:

    Theme 1 Challenges of living in a built environment (living in residential places, changing residential environments, urban-rural interaction)

    Theme 2 People and the natural world interactions (weather and climate influences, water supply, flooding, drought, desertification, rivers and coasts)

                 Unit 2 –  Development and problem solving:

    Theme 3. Uneven development and sustainable environments.  The paper presents a problem (in an unfamiliar context) and explores two or more options for its solution. Candidates need to select their preferred option and justify their decision in a piece of extended writing.

    How will I learn?

    Field work, role play tasks, individual research tasks, group presentations. 

    How will I be assessed?

    • Exams: Geography is a linear course, 2 exams at the end of yr11, 2A and 2B are examined together.
    • Unit 1 is assessed by a 1 hour paper. It is worth 30% of the total marks. The paper consists of two compulsory questions, each worth 30 marks.
    • Unit 2A is a 30 minute paper which assesses the content of theme 3.
    • Unit 2B is a 1 hour 30 minute paper. It is a problem solving paper and may assess knowledge and understanding of any part of the specification.
    • Controlled Assessment
    • Candidates complete one controlled assessment task based on a fieldwork enquiry. It is worth 25% of the total marks.

    What happens after this course?

    With a B grade you are guaranteed a place on the AS/A2 Geography course;

    This encourages students to understand a global world, its complex challenges and such issues as climate change, shifts in economic power, poverty and deprivation and sustainability.

    Job Ideas:

    Geography is a broad based academic degree which is well respected by employers. Geography graduates have one of the highest rates of graduate employment.

    Geographers enter a very wide range of career areas and put simply there is no such thing as a geography job, there are jobs that geographers do. Studying geography provides you with valuable skills and a firm base for life-long learning.
